Carrying your stitches.
You don't want to see the "goings on" behind the picture!

We are all tempted to carry threads over from one section of a design to another, but there are some factors to consider when next you have the urge to do so.

Here are some things to remember...

It is not recommended to carry thread across more than three squares of Aida or evenweave fabric.

On linen fabrics, it is best not to carry over more than four threads.

If you plan to live dangerously and bend the rules

  • Pale colored threads can be carried further on light colored fabric without "showing through".
  • Dark threads can be carried further on dark fabric.
  • Linen fabrics will show carrying much more readily than Aida will.
  • Evenweave (or plainweave) fabric will show less than linen does, but more than Aida will.
  • The better your stitching is stretched and framed, the worse long carried threads will look.

Here's to beautiful stitching!
