Hardanger Tips

Hardanger's lacy patterns have been stitched in Norway for hundreds of years, but it almost became a lost art in the early 20th century. While stitchers recognize the beauty and enjoy the rhythm of Hardanger stitching, they often hesitate to cut threads for the delicate open patterns. The cutting doesn't have to be intimidating, even for first-time stitchers. Stitch all blanket stitches and any other stitches that adjoin the cut sections before you begin cutting threads as their function is to keep threads from fraying. A good light, a magnifier, and a pair of scissors with very fine blades are helpful tools for cutting threads. Beginners may want to cut one thread at a time to avoid mistakes. Insert the tip of the bottom scissor blade under the fabric thread and return the tip to the surface before you actually make the cut.

Here's to beautiful stitching!
